Simon’s Top 5 events for July
You’ve worked all week, waited all month and are due a big night out! The DJ drops a banger. The place is going off and you’re losing your s*** big time! For me it’s moments like this when everything falls into perspective but I’ll come back to the euphoria of house music!
I had every intention of using this space as an opportunity to talk exclusively about the 30-odd events happening in the first week of July, as part of Peterborough’s first Pride festival. Of course I’ll talk Pride, but I must first mention Puccini’s Madame Butterfly which is being performed at The Broadway Theatre on Friday, 13th of July. I’ve been longing to see this famous Opera forever but up until now I keep missing it! The music’s magical and the heart-breaking love story right up my street I only hope my expectations aren’t too high!
We saw the musical Miss Saigon just before it finished in the West End, which has a similar storyline to Madame Butterfly, and I sobbed uncontrollably through two complete songs! I’m praying for a repeat of the same emotional hit if I’m honest and can’t wait… Fingers crossed the touring company do it justice!
Okay back to Pride. I know I’m close to Peterborough’s first Pride, but it really is big news… What’s developed is a weeklong festival with over 30 different parties, performances, screenings, events and social gatherings at a whole range of venues across the city. Peterborough Pride is about providing a platform for coming together, celebrating difference, being proud and showing support for our Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender friends and family.
Over the last six months we have talked to hundreds of local LGBTQIA+ folk and lots of allies. It’s been an extraordinarily busy time as Peterborough Pride has completely captured the heart of the city! Actually, what’s been wonderful is seeing a community grow in confidence in the knowledge that the city is right behind us!
I’ve booked the week off work and will be going to everything, but if you were to ask me what I am most looking forward to? It has to be Sidney Charlesheadlining Mixology at the Red Room!
I’ve had some of my best times listening to house music over the years including more recently at Mixology (Mixo). They attract the biggest names in house music, as well as showcasing emerging talent before they start travelling round in private jets…Keep your eye on both @djalishauk and @periodicmusic by the way!!! On a Friday once a month, people come together from across the region to celebrate house music at Red Room. If you like house music, I seriously recommend going and also recommend losing your s*** every now and again!
My other top pic’s during July are the double bill as part of Peterborough Pride, Sardoville Presents For Only One Hour and Drag Bingo with Drag King Louis Cyfer, both at The Key Theatre on Sunday 1st July.
‘For Only An Hour’, is a psuedo-glamorous, one-man romp through childhood dreams, pop culture and queer art, danced to a hilarious soundtrack of Angela Lansbury, Delia Smith and Bette Midler. Following ‘For Only An Hour’ the evening continues with Bingo with serious attitude! The evening promises to have glamour, songs, wonderful prizes and general mayhem. Rules are the same, even suitable for the serious ‘bingoer’ but a warning that the game could get dirty!
