Volunteer at Spill Festival
BE A VOLUNTEER AT SPILL FESTIVAL 2016!
Volunteers are absolutely crucial in helping make SPILL Festival 2016 happen.
If you have some availability from 24 – 31 October 2016 and are interested in supporting innovative art and international artists in Ipswich, we have a fantastic opportunity for you! SPILL 2016 is back in Ipswich and volunteering is your opportunity to get involved with this years’ international festival. The festival dates are 26 – 30 October 2016 but we are looking for volunteers to help with the set up and pack down of the festival as well.
Created in 2007, by artist Robert Pacitti, SPILL is an artist-led festival produced by Pacitti Company. This year’s SPILL is happening across twenty-two Ipswich venues and so volunteers are CRUCIAL to our team.
SPILL Festival takes pride in supporting artists and our audiences in the best way we can, allowing everyone to get the absolute best out of the experience. Our volunteer team is crucial in making that happen. Our volunteers are always:
- Enthusiastic about contemporary art and performance
- Keen to develop an excellent knowledge of the programme and artists (But you don’t have to be an art expert to take part)
- Happy to work as part of a team, as well as act on their own
- Committed to and flexible with shifts where possible
- Prepared to work in Ipswich at various venues and occasionally outdoors
- Welcoming and approachable advocates of SPILL
A core part of all volunteering roles will be to invigilate and be a steward but there are also options to take on a number of additional roles across our unique programme of events. Of course, responsibilities will vary as each shift will be different and depend upon the venue or performance. We will take into account your experience, desires and availability when allocating roles and try our best to accommodate that.
EVENT STEWARD & INVIGILATOR (CORE)
You would be working Front of House, welcoming and providing information to audiences, and generally assisting with the safe smooth running of events. Also you will be asked to monitor venue capacity and gather audience feedback, if you are happy to do so.
ARTIST ASSISTANT (OPTIONAL)
In this role you would facilitate artists under the supervision of the Festival team. You could be asked to help an Artist with aspects of their performance; this could either be behind the scenes or as a part of the work. Artist assistants will often be asked to work with one artist throughout the festival and you may be asked to attend rehearsals too. You are therefore more likely to be selected as an Artist Assistant if you have availability throughout much of the festival.
LEAD VOLUNTEER (OPTIONAL)
In this role you would be responsible for liaising with the SPILL 2016 team, on behalf of the volunteer group. Additionally, you will be assisting the Volunteer Coordinator by supervising volunteers, ensuring they are fulfilling their duties and keeping records of attendance. You will also take the lead in troubleshooting/problem solving any issues that may arise during shifts.
PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT (OPTIONAL)
You would be helping to advertise SPILL Festival. Some tasks may include: helping at the Box Office, distributing marketing materials and assisting with marketing the festival at events. You will be engaging members of the public with the festival programme and gathering audience feedback.
PRODUCTION ASSISTANT (OPTIONAL)
Assisting the production of SPILL 2016 by completing a range of tasks, from setup to take down of events and performances. Tasks may include, Stage Management at certain events or Runner duties. It is likely that you will be required to do light lifting and manual tasks.
In return, we will provide you with the best possible volunteer experience through:
- Training and support, so you feel confident whilst taking on a wide range of tasks
- Involvement in an international artist-led festival of live art and performance
- Opportunities to see parts of the festival programme. (Please keep in mind this will be subject to capacity and availability; but we will try our best to ensure you see some performances.)
- Being part of a network of volunteers and professionals that share a passion for brave, meaningful and exceptionally crafted contemporary art.
2015 VOLUNTEER QUOTES
“I feel like I just woke up from the whirlwind of a fantastic dream! It was really great getting the chance to chat with you all, and I wanted to say once again what a truly wonderful time I had volunteering and connecting with so many inspiring people. Thank you for including me.”
“The volunteering itself never felt like work, I enjoyed every bit of it, even occasional washing of potty or dealing with general gunk in preparation for performance event. I had the opportunity to work across different venues and take up different roles. I also managed to see many performances while on my volunteering duties and in my spare time. I had the opportunity to work closely with one of the artists.”
“I just wanted to say what a wonderful volunteer experience I had and it was so great to meet the team from Pacitti as well as get to know Zierle & Carter a little. The festival was an absolute blast and I look forward to the next one!”
We value diversity; welcome applicants from all backgrounds and abilities and do not discriminate. We only ask that volunteers be aged 18 or over, when they apply. Besides being available on the day(s) for which you volunteer, you may be asked to attend training sessions and briefings prior to the festival itself.
If you have any questions of queries regarding volunteering or would like to know more about getting involved, please contact: Sian Baxter, Volunteer Coordinator, firstname.lastname@example.org
Applications close 10am on Wednesday 12 October
