Stanza Poetry Appreciation Group (24)
STANZA POETRY APPRECIATION GROUP (24)
Primarily a poetry appreciation group where members explore the work of modern and contemporary poets (20th/21st Centuries) based on a particular form, theme or idea. This twenty-fourth gathering will be focusing on HISPANIC POETRY and all that may entail. There will also be a workshop element built into the latter part of the session. It would be pragmatic for members to bring photocopies of chosen poets/poems so everyone can have direct access to the texts in question.
This session is intended for people who want serious conversation about poetry who may not have had a chance to study modern/contemporary poetry or creative writing on English Literature courses at a college or university. Stanza hopes to provide a relaxed, seminar-type atmosphere for members to debate, discuss and enthuse a poetry ‘syllabus’ which they themselves have partially chosen. Squire’s provides excellent coffee and cakes if anyone requires sustenance throughout the session.
Featured texts for Stanza (24) include:
‘The Heights of Macchu Picchu’ – Pablo Neruda / tr. Nathaniel Tarn (Farrar Strauss Giroux, 1967)
‘Selected Poems’ – Cesar Vallejo /tr. Michael Smith & Valentino Gianuzzi (Shearsman, 2006)
This event will be co-hosted by Julia Gaze and Mark Wilson, both of whom have published collections of their own poetry. Julia has also taught Creative Writing at the University of Derby.
