Following their most recent triumph with ‘The Addams Family’ in the main theatre and two sell out plays: ‘Stepping Out’ and ‘Habeus Corpus’, award winning local society ,PODS, continue their run of iconic theatrical showpieces with the much loved Mike Leigh classic: ‘Abigail’s Party.’
Set in that late seventies’ era when browns, beiges and oranges ruled our décor and Demis Roussos and Donna Summer dominated the airwaves, the monster that is Beverly invites the neighbours round for drinks and nibbles. What happens next is a mixture of high farce and Greek tragedy set in suburbia.
Whilst the rock music from Susan’s teenage daughter’s party blares out ominously, much drink and many pineapple and cheesy treats are consumed until something has to give. The tension builds unbearably to one of the most shocking finales in modern drama.
Directed by Sandra Samwell and performed by a society at the top of its game, this version of an old favourite is bound to ‘Light Your Fire’ as Jose Feliciano sings so memorably to set the scene for this assured success. You are advised to book early.
