The City Gallery launched its first Open Exhibition in 2012 and saw artists form all over Peterborough area submit works, receiving an incredible 367 entries. The Competition was open to artists working in any medium or subject matter and artists were invited to submit up to three pieces for professional judging.
Our 2012 judging panel consisted of Colette bailey, Managing Director of Metal, Southend and Liverpool; Andrew Naime, Director of Kettles Yard, Cambridge;Donna Lynas, Artistic Director of Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge; an Shelagh Smith, Chairmen of Vivacity Culture and Leisure. Each piece of work was shown without a title or artist name and three yes votes secured a place in the exhibition. Each judge was then asked to pick their favourite works, which were then taken to a round table discussion to pick the winners.

Donna Lynas, Artistic Director of Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, comments on the winner. ‘Untiled #9 by Kat Burkinshaw, stood out for me the moment I saw it; the image captured and conveyed a quiet stillness. It was an image I kept returning to and whichever time I looked at, details emerged; and of course that incongruous arched tree trunk. For me, it is a simple and authoritative statement.’
