Piccolo – Folksongs
After a break in January Piccolo will be back on 1st February. Our musicians are both first time performers at Piccolo, and not only that but after three Piccolos that have featured a soprano we thought it was high time to give the men a chance, so our musicians will be tenor Jonathan Hanley and pianist/harpsichordist Ben Horden. Their programme will consist of folksong arrangements by composers like Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Brahms, and Dvorak and as well as songs from around the British Isles there’ll be music from further afield – France, Germany and Venice (in Venetian dialect!). It’ll be a chance to hear some of the best loved British Folk songs, from Lincolnshire Poacher, and Early One Morning through Skye Boat Song and Greensleeves. Get ready to join in with some cuckoo sounds too!
As ever, doors open at 10am and the music starts at 10.30. Admission is £4 per adult accompanied by one or more children under five. There are free refreshments (tea/coffee/squash and biscuits) for all. Additional donations for the refreshments are welcome!
Piccolo is a monthly concert for young children, held in St John’s Church in the centre of Peterborough. Each concert lasts approximately an hour; usually the last ten minutes are songs or dances that the children can join in on, with singing, actions, and an instrument from our box of unbreakable child-friendly musical instruments. Piccolo has been running every month except January and August since September 2015.
