Find out about the current Peterborough Presents interns on our Emerge training programme! Our next trainees are due to start in April for their intense six month training programme where they’ll get an inside look into the world of being a sustainable artist in Peterborough and beyond, and work together to help build on Peterborough’s growing creative sector.

Introducing our third and final intern, theatre director Sam Beagley.

What is my artform?

To me Theatre is a powerful tool that can inspire people. It can make people laugh. It can make people cry. It can make people see an injustice and fight to change it. Theatre explores emotion, thought and what it means too be human. It takes bravery and can be exposing. We have used Theatre for thousands of years to tell great story’s and spread new ideas. Theatre is varied, with countless different styles and approaches. From Musicals to the Immersive. Brecht to stanislavski. it is fun, It is entertaining, It is ephemeral. Theatre means something different to everyone and allows for that difference.

Who/what inspires me?

I am inspired by people who through any art form have tried to encourage positive change within the world. Examples that I personally admire are Augusto Boal and Bertolt Brecht. I am also inspired by my experiences of the world around me. My most recent work was concerned with technologies effect upon modern society and how relationships have changed through this advancement. Other work I have done has focused upon the political landscape of the country. While sometimes I just find inspiration from conversations with my friends, or interesting story’s I have heard. I am inspired by plays, films, music ( especially green day), video games,tv,practitioners and people. I never really know what will inspire me . I just know when it does.

Favourite artists:

Augusto Boal, Bertolt Brecht, Antonin Artaud and Marina Abramovic.

What Peterborough means to me:

The first thing thing that comes to mind is home. It is where I was born and where I grew up. Peterborough is and always will be a part of who I am. I would go as far to say that I am proud to be from here. I even support the football team despite that evidently being a terrible idea. Opportunities within the city such as key youth theatre helped to shape what I want to do with my life. I personally believe there’s lots of untapped potential within the city just waiting to be unleashed. if we work to make the arts more visible and accessible it will become the norm for all of the city’s residents to engage with and enjoy the arts more regularly.

What is my dream job/Goal?

I would love to be the Artistic Director of my own successful theatre company. As well as possibly opening my own youth theatre while continuing to work as an Actor. Though if none of this works out I suppose I could settle on being a super hero ( Ideally iron man ).

Here’s a few production shots of Sam’s theatre work:
