The Open Exhibition is an open to all visual art competition. Entered works are judged and selected to be exhibited as part of a professionally curated and public facing show, taking place over all three gallery spaces of Peterborough’s City Gallery. We look to create a dynamic show that serves as a platform in recognising and promoting, showcasing and rewarding, the best selection of visual art from across the region.

This year the City Gallery have been incredibly impressed by the number of applicants, a record of 400 entries.

About the judges

Sarah Brown

Sarah Brown is Programme Curator at Leeds Art Gallery. She is responsible for the exhibitions, collection and programme at the gallery. Recent exhibitions include opening British Art Show 8. With over 10 years of experience she is delighted to have been invited to select/judge the 2016 Open Exhibition at Peterborough, City Gallery.

Dale Devereux Barker

Dale Devereux Barker is best known for his work as a printmaker. However, his practice also extends into the public realm through his collaborative activities with poets and writers, and his substantial contribution to teaching. All these activities function on a desire to communicate to a wide audience and in sharing and enabling others through his practice. He has worked across a diverse range of artistic and cultural environments and has exhibited widely with his work being represented in several prestigious collections.
Dale has an open-hearted approach to his artistic endeavour and says “it is a privilege to be asked to judge this competition; when I see new art displayed I am constantly reminded of what it takes to go through this circuitous and emotional roller-coaster to reach a creative solution. It takes even more courage to be prepared to have it put in front of a so called ‘expert’ for scrutiny! I firmly believe in honesty, authenticity and strong commitment when it comes to attempting this thing we call ‘art’. These qualities have a habit of speaking for themselves. I would encourage artists to submit works that really ‘push the boat out’ – don’t pre-empt what you feel the judges want!”

Yasmin Canvin

Yasmin Canvin is the Director of Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, a roving visual arts organisation that commissions artistic dialogue between artists and audiences, people and place, across East Northamptonshire. Previously a curator for Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery and Angel Row Gallery, Yasmin also delivers professional development events, artist residencies, and manages Professional Development Programmes for artists and curators, as well as leading international research trips to Australia and India.
Yasmin is particularly excited to judge the Open; “one of the most rewarding aspects of the job of a curator is to see and experience new artwork. The role of a judge for this forthcoming Open 2016 will be a great opportunity to see new work and discuss it with colleagues on the panel.”
